(options)
The institutional repositories (or archives) of the world are dominated by two free open source packages (FOSS) today, both generating OAI-compliant, interoperable archives: EPrints and DSpace.
A third contender entered the Australasian space because of its choice by the ARROW project: VITAL. VITAL runs on top of Fedora which is also free open source software but does not provide a fully operational repository; VITAL itself is a commercial front-end product supported by VTLS Inc. Within APSR, the University of Queensland has also produced a Fez front-end product. running on top of Fedora, which is free open source software.
The fifth option is a fully outsourced repository, with ProQuest as the only present example in Australasia.
The Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR) contains comparative information on how widely these packages have been adopted by research institutions worldwide; as does OpenDOAR.
For more information on any one of these packages see the relevant pages.
